South Africa made place in Super Over with outstanding win
Ahmedabad. In the 13th match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, South Africa defeated Afghanistan in a thrilling match during the Double Super Over and confirmed its place in the ‘Group of Death’. Both teams scored the same 187 runs in the stipulated 20 overs, after which the match went into a super over and then a second super over was played.

Afghanistan needed 13 runs to win from the last over, and they had one wicket left. Kagiso Rabada bowled two no-balls under pressure, due to which the match reached a tie. Due to a mistake while taking runs, the match was tied and a super over had to be faced. In the first super over, Afghanistan scored 17 runs against Lungi Ngidi. South Africa’s Tristan Stubbs took the match into the second super over by hitting a six on the last ball. In the second Super Over, South Africa scored 23 runs thanks to the aggressive batting of Tristan Stubbs and David Miller. Afghanistan had a target of 24 runs. Mohammad Nabi was out off the bowling of Keshav Maharaj, but Rahmanullah Gurbaz gave hope by hitting three consecutive sixes. Six runs were needed off the last ball, but Gurbaz was caught at point and Afghanistan’s hopes were over.
South Africa’s innings
After winning the toss, the Afghan team came to bowl first and quickly took the wicket of Aiden Markram. After this, Quinton de Kock (59 runs, 41 balls) and Ryan Rickelton (61 runs, 28 balls) made a brilliant partnership and put the team in a strong position. De Kock has become South Africa’s highest run-scorer in the T20 World Cup, with a total of 737 runs. Rashid Khan made a comeback in the match by dismissing both the set batsmen. In the end, with the help of David Miller (20 not out) and Marco Janson (16 runs, 7 balls), South Africa scored 187/6 in 20 overs. Afghanistan’s Azmatullah Omarzai took 3 wickets.
Afghanistan’s innings
Rahmanullah Gurbaz (84 runs, 42 balls) and Ibrahim Zadran got off to a fast start. However, Lungi Ngidi and Rabada applied pressure by taking wickets in the middle overs. Captain Rashid Khan played a quick inning of 20 runs, but the excitement of the last over tied the match. In the end, South Africa took the lead in the double super over and Afghanistan suffered a heartbreaking defeat.
