South Korea has achieved a major milestone in the field of defense technology by launching its first indigenous 4.5 generation fighter plane KF-21 Boramae has been presented to the world. This state-of-the-art fighter jet was unveiled by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) on 25 March 2026 at its production plant in Sacheon. This achievement is also special because it was taken to production level within a few years of its first flight.
This development has happened at a time when India is still working on its Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). This rapid progress of South Korea reflects its growing strength and technology in the global defense sector.
When did the journey of KF-21 start?
1. The foundation of the KF-21 program was laid in 2001, when then President Kim Dae-jung proposed to develop an indigenous fighter aircraft.
2. This project gained momentum after 2016 and its first prototype was revealed in 2021.
3. This aircraft successfully made its first flight in 2022, after which the way for its mass production was cleared.
What is the speciality?
1. The KF-21 has been designed as a two-seat 4.5th generation fighter aircraft.
2. Its objective is to bridge the technological gap between the fourth and fifth generation jets.
3. It has been designed mainly keeping in mind the regional security challenges, and it has also been kept balanced in terms of cost.
Is the KF-21 ‘fifth generation’?
KAI does not consider it a full fifth generation fighter, but its capabilities are said to be quite advanced. KAI chief Kang Goo-young said “The KF-21 is far ahead of other fourth-generation jet aircraft and is very close to the performance of the fifth generation. People call the KF-21 a fourth-generation fighter, but I believe this is an underestimation.”
Is it better than Rafale?
The Indian Air Force currently uses advanced fourth generation aircraft like Rafale, which are made by France’s Dassault Aviation. South Korea claims that the KF-21 can prove to be better than Rafale and Eurofighter Typhoon in terms of performance.
The KF-21 includes modern stealth technology, advanced avionics and state-of-the-art combat systems. The special thing is that all this has been made available at a lower cost than expensive jets like F-35. This is why it is being considered a strong and economical option in regional defense.
