South Korean musical star Ock Joo Hyun buys record-setting $12.9M Seoul penthouse
Musical actress Ock Joo Hyun has purchased a luxury penthouse in Seoul’s upscale Hannam-dong neighborhood for 19 billion won (US$12.9 million), setting a record for the highest transaction in the complex.
According to The Korea Timesthe deal was recently completed after Ock signed the purchase agreement in May last year. The unit, located in Yongsan District’s Hannam The Hill complex, spans about 332 square meters and features a rare duplex layout across the first and second floors.
The property was reportedly acquired from Hur Hee Soo, an executive at South Korean food company SPC Group. Hur is reported to have purchased the unit in 2015 for 6.9 billion won, representing a gain of about 175%.
A mortgage with a maximum bond amount of 12.3 billion won was established as part of Ock’s transaction.

Completed in 2011 on the former site of Dankook University, Hannam The Hill is widely regarded as one of South Korea’s most exclusive residential complexes. It is home to several high-profile residents, including BTS members RM and Jimin, actor So Ji Sub, and LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang Mo.
Another notable transaction in the complex occurred last year when actress Kim Tae Hee reportedly sold her unit for 12.7 billion won after seven years of ownership.
Addressing public speculation about the purchase, Ock’s legal representative said all taxes and administrative procedures related to the deal were handled “lawfully and transparently.”
“This is her first home after many years of work in the entertainment industry, making it especially meaningful,” the representative said, as cited by The Korea Times. “We hope people will view it warmly without misunderstandings or unfounded speculation.”
According to The Korea HeraldOck, 46, debuted as the lead vocalist of girl group Fin.K.L in 1998 and began her musical theater career with “Aida” in 2005.
She has since starred in numerous hit productions, including “Rebecca,” “Wicked,” “Marie Antoinette,” and “Redbook.”
