Singapore, named Southeast Asia’s safest country by online platform Numbeo, has increased patrols in some tourist areas after the Bondi Beach shooting in Australia that killed 15 people.
“Our security agencies are monitoring the threat environment closely,” Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs said as cited by Channel News Asia.
Police have enhanced patrols in certain areas and will continue to calibrate security measures.
The Singapore government also urged members of the public to remain vigilant, calling on anyone who knows or suspects that a person has been radicalized or is engaging in extremist activities to contact the Internal Security Department, The Straits Times reported.
The move comes after two gunmen killed 15 people and wounded dozens more at Bondi Beach last week during a Jewish event marking the start of Hanukkah. It was Australia’s worst mass shooting in about 30 years.
Australian police have classified the incident as a terrorist attack.
Known for its low crime rates and high levels of safety, Singapore has become a popular destination for foreign tourists.
The city-state has recently stepped up security measures to safeguard its reputation.
From Jan. 30, Singapore will implement stricter measures to prevent travelers deemed high-risk or who do not meet entry requirements from boarding flights to the country.
