Spanish tourist fined, deported for drug use and vandalism in HCMC

A Spanish tourist has been fined and deported from Vietnam after being caught spray-painting graffiti and testing positive for drugs in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 1.

The downtown district police found Romeo Lera Juan Luis, 31, spraying graffiti on buildings at the intersection of Le Loi and Pasteur streets on Dec. 4, Lao Dong people reported.

A drug test revealed he was under the influence, and he was unable to provide a passport at the time of his arrest.

Luis admitted he entered Vietnam as a tourist on Dec. 1 and had purchased spray paint cans for vandalism in public spaces.

Luis was penalized for illegal drug use, failing to carry a passport, and engaging in unauthorized activities in Vietnam, Cong An, Ho Chi Minh Citythe news site of HCMC police, reported. He was fined and deported.

Authorities also fined the hotel where Luis stayed on Pham Ngu Lao Street for failing to report his temporary residence, as required by local regulations.
