According to an article published in the Indian Express, some party leaders say that Kharge is not following the principle of ‘one person, one post’. Apart from being the President of Congress, he is also handling the responsibility of Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha. Critics allege that due to simultaneous control over both the organization and parliamentary politics, space is not being created for new leaders.
Kharge surrounded by allegations of nepotism
Coomi Kapoor writes for the Indian Express that Kharge is also being accused of promoting nepotism. Recently his son Priyank Kharge has been made the Home Minister in the DK Shivakumar government in Karnataka. Apart from this, there is talk of giving preference to people close to Kharge in Rajya Sabha elections also. Many leaders within the party have expressed their displeasure over his colleague Pranab Jha getting the ticket from Jharkhand. Before this, his close associate Neeraj Dangi has also been sent to Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan. Some party leaders believe that dissatisfaction is increasing due to continuous preference being given to close people on important posts and occasions.

Rahul’s biggest resentment regarding Kharge is regarding Tamil Nadu Elections. It is being said that Rahul Gandhi wanted the Congress to exit the old alliance with the DMK and consider a new political partnership with actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay, but Kharge and P Chidambaram insisted on maintaining the DMK alliance. The election results were disappointing for Congress and the party could get only 5 seats despite the alliance with DMK, while Vijay emerged as a big face of the state politics. It is said that Rahul Gandhi is not satisfied with this decision.
Who is the frontrunner for the post of Congress President?
Meanwhile, discussions about change of leadership in Congress have also intensified. There is talk in political circles that if Kharge leaves the post of president, then General Secretary of the party organization KC Venugopal can be the strongest contender. Venugopal has been counted among the trusted associates of the Gandhi family for a long time and his hold on organizational matters is also considered strong. However, till now there has been no official response from the Congress leadership on any such speculation. But the voices being raised within the party are definitely indicating that in the coming months there may be a major political stir regarding the top leadership and organizational structure of the Congress. Only time will answer whether there has actually been any distance in the relations between the Gandhi family and Kharge or not, but it is certain that the debate regarding leadership within the Congress has now started coming out openly.
