The NPP has received 68 lakh votes or 61 percent, giving it an edge over its rivals. Whereas the party of opposition leader Sajith Premadasa is far behind with only 18 percent votes. The party is moving towards achieving a two-thirds majority as it is expected to get more of the 29 seats which would give the party an absolute majority with 150 seats in the 225-member House. The NPP won three out of six seats in Jaffna Province, dealing a blow to the traditional Tamil parties that dominated there. Never before has a Sinhala-dominated party won in Jaffna.

Dissanayake, a self-styled Marxist, won a landslide victory in the September presidential elections on a promise to fight corruption and recover stolen assets. This victory came after two years of slow-moving financial recession.

An indication of the breadth of support for Dissanayake is that his party received the highest number of votes in the northern district of Jaffna, dominated by the island's minority Tamil community, for the first time since independence from Britain in 1948. Happened once.

Dissanayake, a 55-year-old labourer's son, said after Thursday's vote he hoped to get a “strong majority” in Parliament to put forward his platform.
