Delhi: Sri Lanka cricket team has taken a big decision for the upcoming T20 World Cup. The selectors have made Dasun Shanaka the captain of the 25-member preliminary squad. He has replaced Charith Asalanka. This decision was taken by the National Selection Committee on Friday.

Sri Lanka revealed its initial team

Selection committee chairman Pramodaya Wickramasingha said that this decision has been taken in view of the recent performance and World Cup experience. Asalanka’s batting performance has not been good in recent times. At the same time, Shanaka has played three T20 World Cups and also has captaincy experience.

Wickramasingha said that after stepping down from the captaincy, Asalanka will get a chance to concentrate on his game. He is expected to perform better in the future home series against Pakistan and England. Recently Asalanka had withdrawn from Pakistan tour due to security reasons. Despite this, he will remain in the team as a batsman.

The selection committee also made it clear that not many changes will be made in the team. After talking to coach Sanath Jayasuriya, it was decided that it would not be right to change the entire team right now. Hopefully Asalanka will regain his form soon.

Sri Lanka will face Australia, Ireland, Zimbabwe and Oman in the T20 World Cup. The team will play its first match on 7 February.

Wickramasingha also said that from now on the responsibility of the team’s performance will also be of the coach and trainer. Strict rules will be made regarding fitness. If the players are not able to reach the prescribed level then responsibility will be fixed.
