Sri Lanka wants to become a member of BRICS group, will apply in the BRICS summit to be held in October.

Colombo: BRICS is a group of nine countries. In which India is already a member. Now India's neighboring country Sri Lanka has also expressed its desire to become its member. He wants to apply for this.

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijeta Herath said yesterday i.e. on October 14 that Colombo will apply for membership of BRICS and New Development Bank. This group of five countries has now become a group of nine countries. In such a situation, if the organization accepts Sri Lanka's application, then BRICS will become a group of 10 countries.

Why does Sri Lanka want to become a member of BRICS group?

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Herath said that BRICS is a group working for strong, inclusive beneficial cooperation, peace and development as per the United Nations Charter. For this he has sought support from the group. However, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will not be able to participate in the summit this year due to the upcoming elections.

When is BRICS summit?

This year the BRICS Summit is to be held for two days i.e. from 22 to 24 October in Kazan city of Russia. Herath said that the Foreign Secretary will attend this summit. They will also apply for inclusion of Sri Lanka in BRICS. Sri Lanka has been wanting to join BRICS for a long time. In May this year, the then Foreign Minister Ali Sabri had also expressed his desire to join BRICS.

BRICS was a group of five countries

Initially BRICS was a group of five countries. This was a group of only Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. After this, in January this year, four more countries Saudi Arabia, Iran, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia and Egypt joined the group. Now the number of group members has increased from 5 to 9.

What is the purpose of BRICS group formation?

Before BRICS group, it was BRIC group. In the year 2006, Brazil, Russia, India and China together formed the BRIC group. In 2010, South Africa also joined and it became BRICS. The grouping was established to bring together the world's most important developing countries and challenge the political and economic power of the wealthy countries of North America and Western Europe.
