462 Indian citizens arrested in Sri Lanka, accused of illegal fishing

Colombo: Sri Lankan Navy has arrested Indian fishermen on charges of illegal fishing. The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 12 fishermen from India on charges of illegal fishing in the sea. Besides, his boat has also been confiscated. This information was given by an official in a statement.

With the arrest of 12 more people by the Sri Lankan Navy, the number of Indian nationals caught in such incidents in the island country this year has increased to 462. The Sri Lanka Navy said in a press release that the fishermen were arrested. Their boat has also been seized off the Point Pedro coast in the northern province of Jaffna.

The 12 captured fishermen were taken to Kankesanthurai port and will be handed over to the Malady Fisheries Inspectorate for further action, it said. The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 462 Indian fishermen and seized 62 of their boats for illegal fishing in the island's territorial waters so far in 2024, the statement said.

It said the fishermen have been handed over to authorities for legal action. Sri Lanka's Fisheries Ministry said that a 12-member Indian team will arrive here on Tuesday to discuss the recurring problem between the two neighbors i.e. fishing by fishermen. Fishermen from both countries are often arrested for unknowingly entering each other's territorial waters. (agency)
