Sri Lankan players doubtful for IPL 2026? SLC puts in condition for players to earn NOC

In a major development, Sri Lanka Cricket has asked its players to pass fitness tests in order to get No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for franchise leagues. The move comes as the board looks to keep a check on players before allowing them to take part in overseas T20 tournaments.

IPL 2026 is set to begin from March 28 and several Sri Lankan players are part of different teams this season. Meanwhile, a few players have already passed the fitness tests and are set to feature.

Dushmantha Chameera and Pathum Nissanka from Delhi Capitals along with Kamindu Mendis from Sunrisers Hyderabad have passed the physical performance tests and are cleared to feature. Meanwhile, Nuwan Thushara’s participation will depend on his test result, as the board made it clear in a press release.

“Nuwan Thushara’s eligibility for a NOC to participate in the IPL will be subject to the outcome of his physical performance test.”

Injuries could delay a few players in IPL 2026

The board also confirmed that a few key players are yet to take the test as they are still recovering from injuries picked up around the T20 World Cup period.

“Wanindu Hasaranga, Eshan Malinga and Matheesha Pathirana, who have requested NOCs to participate in IPL 2026, are yet to undergo the physical performance test, as they are still undergoing rehabilitation to recover from injuries sustained.”

Pathirana is already expected to miss the early part of the IPL season and is likely to be available only around mid-April.

Focus shifts towards fitness standards

Sri Lanka Cricket also explained that this step is part of a broader effort to improve fitness levels within the squad during this break from international cricket.

“At present, SLC is conducting an eight-week specialized physical training program for all nationally contracted players. This initiative aims to enhance players’ physical performance standards in preparation for upcoming international assignments.”

The board further added that these tests are a routine process and only those who meet the required standards will be allowed to play.

“Players are also undergoing the mandatory physical performance tests, a routine process followed to check fitness standards. Only those who meet the required standards will be cleared to participate in the domestic tournament and granted an NOC to take part in IPL 2026.”

With several players already cleared and a few still in line, the situation is likely to become clearer in the coming days as IPL 2026 draws closer.
