Sri Lankan President emphasizes on stability in the economy, will hold talks with the International Monetary Fund

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake says that the biggest need in the country at this time is to establish stability and confidence in the economy. Emphasizing its importance, he announced the immediate resumption of negotiations with the International Monetary Fund.

In his first address to the nation since taking office, President Dissanayake yesterday said it was important to achieve stability and confidence in the current economy, Sri Lanka's leading newspaper Daily Mirror reported. We plan to begin immediate negotiations with the International Monetary Fund and pursue activities related to the extended credit facility. Negotiations are being held with the concerned lenders to secure necessary debt relief.


He said that Sri Lanka needs a Parliament that can understand the will of the people. He expressed his gratitude to the citizens for their cooperation and support in the presidential elections. Dissanayake said that this is not his victory but the victory of the people of the entire country. The President said that the dream of a prosperous nation is growing in his eyes. The country will build a strong nation as a team. In his address, the President stressed on eliminating negative traits in the political culture. Dissanayake said that we are all citizens of Sri Lanka first of all. After that Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim, Burgher or Malay. He will not hesitate to implement constitutional, economic and political reforms if needed. Diversity will be respected. The era of division based on caste, religion and class will be completely ended.

The President said that he envisions a Sri Lanka in which no parent has to worry about the future of their child. Every parent has the right to provide quality school and education to their child. He is fully committed to securing the future of the next generation. By promoting knowledge, attitudes and skills, a promising future will be created for the young generation. He aims to create a nation where the world respects the Sri Lankan passport and every citizen can proudly say, “I am a Sri Lankan”. The President said, “Our people see the same dream every day with the sunrise. That is “tomorrow will be better than today.”
