Sri Lankan Prime Minister Gunawardene resigns, congratulates newly elected President Dissanayake

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardene has resigned from his post after Anura Kumara Dissanayake was elected the new President and the new government took charge.

Mr Gunawardene, in a letter addressed to President-elect Anura Kumara Dissanayake, said he was resigning from his post with immediate effect.
In his resignation letter, he said, 'I respectfully congratulate you on being elected as the ninth Executive President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in the Presidential election held on September 21, 2024.'


Sri Lankan news portal Economy Next quoted Mr Gunawardene as saying, “I hope that as President you will be able to ensure the welfare of the people by continuing the work we have done to uplift and recover the country and its citizens from the difficult and challenging situation that Sri Lanka is facing.”
