FIRIANS

Amid ongoing anti-US and anti-Israel protests and prevailing tension in different parts of the Union Territory following the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Srinagar Police on Tuesday registered an FIR against certain news channels, media outlets, and individuals for allegedly spreading misleading information to instigate unrest.

A police spokesperson said that Srinagar Police has taken serious cognizance of the deliberate circulation of false, fabricated, and misleading information by certain news channels, media outlets, and individuals across electronic and social media platforms.

“These elements are systematically attempting to spread distorted narratives and unverified content with the clear intent to incite unrest, disturb public order, and create disharmony in society. Such malicious misinformation campaigns pose a grave threat to peace, security, and the integrity of the nation,” the spokesperson said.

Acting firmly, Srinagar Police has registered FIR No. 01/2026 at the Cyber Police Station under relevant legal provisions.

Srinagar Police reiterated its resolve to maintain law and order and said it will not allow any attempt to destabilize peace in the region.

In a public message, authorities stressed the importance of verifying information before reporting and cautioned against publishing unconfirmed news or speculative content. The advisory highlighted that the spread of rumours and misinformation can create panic, disturb public order, and potentially endanger lives.

“Responsible Journalism Matters” and “Verify Before You Report” were the key messages underlined by the police, calling upon journalists to avoid unverified claims and adhere strictly to factual reporting.

The advisory further appealed to media houses and social media users to ensure accuracy and credibility by reporting only verified information. Officials reiterated that responsible reporting plays a crucial role in maintaining peace and stability, particularly during sensitive developments.

The police also reminded that spreading rumours can have serious consequences and urged everyone to act with caution and accountability.
