Stampede broke out during Christmas celebrations in Nigeria, 10 people died
Abuja: Celebrations were going on on Saturday on the occasion of Christmas Festival in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria. During this time, food items started being distributed by the church to the people present there. Due to the gathering of a large number of people, 10 people including four children died in the stampede.
Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh said in a statement that the stampede took place in the early morning at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, a posh area of Abuja. He said that more than 1000 people have been evacuated from the church. In the viral video of the incident, several bodies can be seen on the ground and people screaming for help.
Treatment of the injured continues
Adeh said that some of the injured have been treated and discharged. While the treatment of others is going on. It is the second such stampede in Africa's most populous country in a week as local organizations, churches and members of the public organize events to raise donations ahead of Christmas.
