Lucasfilm is planning a huge return to movie theaters. Reports say three brand new Star Wars trilogies are now in development. For the past few years, Star Wars focused mostly on Disney Plus shows. Big screen releases were put on pause. The last Star Wars movie came out in 2019.
That is about to change.
Lucasfilm already has single movies planned starting in 2026. But these trilogies show something bigger is coming. This is not a one off plan. It is a long term reset. Behind the scenes, the studio has been rethinking everything. The goal now is creative freedom. Lucasfilm wants filmmakers to tell personal stories. Stories that stand on their own.
They no longer want every project tied tightly to old timelines. Nostalgia is no longer the main focus. New ideas matter more. At the same time, older storylines are being wrapped up. The High Republic era is coming to an end. This clears space for something new.
There are also fewer streaming projects in development. The movie slate is more focused. Everything points toward theaters becoming the priority again. According to reports, this new phase will be built around three major trilogies.
One of them comes from Simon Kinberg. He worked on The Force Awakens. In late 2024, Lucasfilm brought him in to develop a full trilogy.At first, people thought it might continue the Skywalker story. That is no longer the case. Insiders say it will launch a completely new storyline.
Very little is known so far. Kinberg has said he wants big sci fi moments. He also wants deep emotional characters. The focus will be on people, not just spectacle.
Another trilogy may begin with Star Wars Starfighter.
The movie was first described as a standalone project. That may not be true anymore. New reports suggest it is meant to launch a trilogy. Ryan Gosling leads the film. He plays a protector guarding a child. The story takes place years after The Rise of Skywalker.
New villains are introduced. Mia Goth and Matt Smith play major roles. The film explores parts of the galaxy never seen before. It is directed by Shawn Levy. It is the first Star Wars movie completely separate from the Skywalker saga.
The cast is large and packed with big names. Filming is already underway in Europe.
The Mandalorian and Grogu
The third possible trilogy is centered on The Mandalorian. Lucasfilm wants this to become a full movie trilogy. But one thing matters first. Box office performance.
The Mandalorian and Grogu releases on May 22, 2026. It will be the first Star Wars movie in theaters in 7 years. The film was originally planned as Season 4 of the Disney Plus series. It was later upgraded into a theatrical release.
Pedro Pascal returns as Din Djarin. Grogu is back as well. Their journey continues on the big screen.
If the movie performs well, more films are expected. Given how popular the characters are, the chances look strong. Most Star Wars movies have crossed $1 billion worldwide. Only one failed to do so. Other projects are still in development. A Rey movie is being worked on. A film about the first Jedi is also planned.
But right now, the focus is clear.
Star Wars is heading back to theaters. And this time, it is thinking bigger than ever.
