Car exports reach new peak in FY2026
According to SIAM data, around 5,99,276 passenger vehicles were exported from India in the first eight months of FY2026. This figure is about 20 percent higher than the same period last year. In FY2025, 4,98,763 cars were exported between April and November. That means a direct increase of nearly 1 lakh units has been recorded this year. This shows the popularity of Indian cars in the global market.
Auto sector on the brink of record phase
With four months left in FY2026, given the current pace, this year is likely to be the biggest ever record for car exports. A total of 7,70,364 passenger vehicles were exported in FY2025. Interestingly, more than 80,000 cars have been shipped abroad in a single month three times so far in the current financial year. The figures for September, October and November testify to this strength.
Concerns over Mexico’s tariffs
Along with this success comes a challenge. Mexico has announced that import duties on cars manufactured in India will be increased from 20 percent to 50 percent from January 1, 2026. Mexico is an important export market for India, with India exporting about 1.94 lakh cars and SUVs there in FY2024, a major share of total exports.

Which companies’ cars go to Mexico?
Maruti Suzuki exports a large number of cars to Mexico every year. These include Baleno, Swift, Dzire and Brezza models. Apart from this, the Grand i10, Aura, Venue and Creta cars are shipped from Hyundai. Cars from the Volkswagen Group and Nissan India also sell significantly in Mexico.
What does this record mean for India?
The growing demand for Made-in-India cars proves that India is now not only a large market, but has also emerged as a strong manufacturing hub. If the challenges like tariffs are properly addressed, India can create a new history in the field of car exports in the future.
