Step towards clean air in Delhi-NCR, Supreme Court bans pre-BS IV vehicles
Amidst the continuously deteriorating air quality in Delhi and the National Capital Region, the Supreme Court has approved taking strict action against older and more polluting vehicles. The court has now allowed the authorities to take action against vehicles that fall below BS IV emission standards and are being used in Delhi-NCR.
The decision came after the amendment proposal
The decision came after an amendment proposal was made in the court by the Delhi government, in which the government had underlined the negative impact of such vehicles on air quality. The Delhi government, in its amendment application, had requested the court to impose strict restrictions on the use of old, highly polluting vehicles. The government argued that due to continuous operation of these vehicles, the level of air pollution in the capital is continuously increasing and the health of the general public is being seriously affected.
The Supreme Court said that it is necessary to take immediate steps to improve the air quality in the capital. The court directed the authorities to identify vehicles older than BS IV and prohibit their operation or take legal action against them as necessary. The court also clarified that this step is being taken to control air pollution and ensure the safety of people’s health.
According to experts, the main causes of air pollution in Delhi-NCR include old vehicles, industrial emissions and construction work. The level of air pollution has seen a steady increase over the years and the air in the capital becomes extremely poisonous, especially in winter. There is a possibility of significant reduction in pollution by removing old vehicles or banning their operation.
Supreme Court expressed expectations from Delhi Government
The court asked the authorities to ensure that transparency is maintained in the process and any inconvenience to common citizens is minimized. The Supreme Court has expected the Delhi government and concerned agencies to effectively implement the steps taken against old vehicles, so that the air quality in the capital and its surrounding areas can be seen improving.
This step is a news of relief for lakhs of people living in Delhi, because it will reduce the adverse effects on their health and the air of the capital will gradually start getting cleaner.
