Stock Market Closed: Trading trend in the stock market remained sluggish before Christmas, Sensex slipped 116 points.

Mumbai. Trading in the domestic stock market remained sluggish on Wednesday due to a short trading week due to Christmas holidays amid mixed global cues. In volatile trading, Sensex closed with a fall of 116 points and Nifty with a fall of 35 points. BSE’s benchmark 30-share index Sensex fell 116.14 points, or 0.14 percent, to close at 85,408.70.

During trading it rose to a high of 85,738.18 points and fell to a low of 85,342.19 points. NSE’s 50-share standard index Nifty also closed at 26,142.10 points, down 35.05 points or 0.13 percent. Among the companies included in the Sensex group, shares of InterGlobe Aviation, Sun Pharma, Asian Paints, Reliance Industries, Hindustan Unilever and Tata Steel declined.

On the contrary, shares of Trent, UltraTech Cement, Maruti Suzuki and Power Grid were in profit. In other markets of Asia, South Korea’s Kospi and Japan’s Nikkei closed with losses, while China’s Shanghai Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng closed with gains. European markets saw a slight rise during afternoon trading.

American markets closed with gains on Tuesday. Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited, said, “The Indian stock market remained in a tight range this week with less trading session due to holidays. The recently announced liquidity enhancement measures by the Reserve Bank of India are expected to improve systemic liquidity and help contain currency fluctuations.

The RBI had said on Tuesday that it will buy government bonds worth Rs 2 lakh crore and auction $10 billion worth of dollar-rupee purchases to increase liquidity in the banking system. These OMO purchases and swap auctions will be conducted between December 29, 2025 and January 22, 2026.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold shares worth Rs 1,794.80 crore on Tuesday, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought shares worth Rs 3,812.37 crore. In the international market, Brent crude rose 0.18 percent to $ 62.49 per barrel. On Tuesday, Sensex fell 42.64 points to 85,524.84 points and Nifty stood at 26,177.15 points with a slight gain of 4.75 points.
