Stock markets closed: Stock markets fell due to big fall in major indices, Sensex-Nifty in red.
Mumbai. Due to the derailment of US-Iran peace talks and continued pressure on the rupee, domestic stock markets witnessed a big fall on Tuesday with major indices falling nearly two per cent. BSE Sensex fell 1,456.04 points (1.92 percent) to close at 74,559.24. The Nifty-50 index of the National Stock Exchange also closed at 23,379.55 points, down 436.30 points or 1.83 percent. This is a five-week low for both the major indices. The stock markets have been falling for the fourth consecutive day.
Especially, huge selling has been seen in the market on the first two days of this week. Media reports say that US President Donald Trump is again considering military action against Iran. Due to this, most of the major stock markets abroad also slipped. Apart from this, the investment sentiment in the market has also weakened due to rupee falling to historical low today. For the first time, one dollar has been quoted at more than Rs 95.50 per dollar.
Currently it is at Rs 95.63 per dollar. Amid all-round selling, there was more pressure on medium and small companies. In the macro market, Nifty Midcap-50 index fell 2.43 percent and Smallcap-100 index fell 3.17 percent. All sectors remained under pressure. The realty group index fell more than four percent. The index of IT fell by four and a half percent and that of consumer durables fell by more than three and a half percent.
Indices of auto, media, chemical, finance, banking, FMCG, pharma and health groups also fell by more than one percent. Among Sensex companies, shares of Tech Mahindra and Adani Ports fell by about four and a half percent. HCL Technologies declined by more than four percent and TCS declined by four and a half percent. Shares of Titan, BEL, Bajaj Finance, Infosys, Trent and Bajaj Finserv fell more than three percent.
Shares of UltraTech Cement, Eternal, Asian Paints, Maruti Suzuki, Indigo and L&T also slipped by two to three per cent. Shares of HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries, Hindustan Unilever, ITC, Mahindra & Mahindra, ICICI Bank, Power Grid, Sun Pharma and Kotak Mahindra Bank slipped by one to two percent. Axis Bank shares also remained in the red.
