Clash between BJP and Congress workers in Pune
Pune. The tension between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress workers turned into a violent clash in Pune, Maharashtra. This incident happened during the protests that started against the statement of State Congress President Harsh Vardhan Sapkal. Workers of both the parties came face to face, which led to stone pelting. Many people were injured in this conflict and vehicles were also damaged.
Clash outside Congress Bhawan
According to the police, BJP workers led by local leaders were protesting outside the Congress Bhawan against Sapkal’s statement. Meanwhile, Congress workers also reached there in support of their state president. Police deployed additional forces to maintain normalcy, but the atmosphere deteriorated at around 1 pm, resulting in stone pelting.
Journalists and policemen were also injured
According to Pune City Police Joint Commissioner Ranjan Kumar Sharma, two journalists, a party worker and a policeman were injured in the violent clash. He said that the process of filing FIR from both the parties is going on and the incident is being fully investigated.
Controversy arising from statement
This entire controversy erupted after a complaint was filed against Sapkal. It is alleged that he compared Tipu Sultan with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire. This comment was made in the context of the ongoing controversy over the photo of Tipu Sultan installed in the office of Deputy Mayor Shan-e-Hind Nihal Ahmed in Malegaon.
BJP filed a complaint
BJP Pune city president Dheeraj Ghate said that this type of comparison hurts the sentiments of people who respect the Maratha king, which cannot be accepted.

As the controversy escalated, Harshvardhan Sapkal clarified that his statement has been misrepresented. He also said that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is the pride of the country and Tipu Sultan fought against foreign powers.
Sapkal alleged that BJP is trying to capitalize on this issue politically. At present the situation is under control, but due to the incident, police surveillance has been increased and the administration has appealed to the citizens to maintain peace.
