Stop flies from entering your home with a simple 5-minute change

Another heatwave is approaching with potential temperatures reaching 34C later this week. As conditions heat up, countless Britons will be reaching for their fans in an attempt to stay comfortable, but this could welcome an uninvited visitor into your property.

The manner in which you’re operating your fan might actually be attracting more flies indoors, which during sweltering weather is particularly unwelcome. Why do flies enter your property? DIY specialist Glen Peskett from Saxton Blades Multi Tools explained: “A lot of people think the best thing to do is open every window and stick a fan on full blast.

“The trouble is, if you’ve got your windows wide open in the middle of the day, you’re making it much easier for flies to find their way inside.”

“Once they’re in, they’re usually following smells from fruit, food or the bin, especially during a heatwave when everything starts smelling a bit stronger.

“You’re much better off keeping your blinds or curtains closed during the hottest part of the day, then opening the windows later on once it’s actually cooler outside.

“That’s when your fan can really help move the cooler air around the house.”

How to maintain a cool home during a heatwave

To maintain comfortable temperatures while keeping flies at bay, there are several measures you can implement.

Keep your windows shut during peak daytime heat. Instead, open them during early morning hours and in the evening.

If a window receives direct sunlight, keep your curtains drawn. To keep flies at bay, ensure all fruit is covered at all times and avoid leaving dirty dishes lying around.

“It’s also important to empty the bin regularly and clean up any spills on the counters. Glen said: “People often think flies just appear out of nowhere.

“Most of the time they’re following food smells. If you can cut those down and avoid leaving your windows open all day, you’re much less likely to end up with unwanted visitors.”
