Storm and heavy rains in Bihar kill three, disrupt transport and power services
Sudden change in weather caused severe storms, lightning and heavy rains across Bihar causing widespread disruption to public life. Three people have so far been confirmed dead and several people injured in separate incidents.
The Meteorological Department had earlier issued warnings, but the rapid change in weather left the administration and common people unprepared. The roof of a house collapsed in Jehanabad due to strong storm. At that time, four children were playing outside the house, who were buried under the rubble. The locals quickly rescued them and took them to the hospital. According to doctors, all four are undergoing treatment and their condition is stable.
In several districts of the state, trees were uprooted, electricity poles were broken and mud houses were damaged due to the storm. Electricity supply has been cut off in rural areas, forcing people to spend the night in darkness. In many places standing crops were destroyed, causing losses to the farmers.
The Meteorological Department has issued an alert in 19 districts of the state and warned of the possibility of similar weather in the next 24 hours. Experts advised caution citing the risk of lightning. The administration has urged people to stay indoors and not go out in the open during inclement weather.
Due to strong storms and low visibility, two planes had to be diverted from their intended destination. This caused inconvenience to passengers and delayed several flights. Passengers had to wait for a long time at the airport.
Various trains are running behind schedule and some trains have to stop midway. Waterlogging and technical problems have disrupted services on the railway tracks. Passengers have to wait for a long time at the station.
Waterlogged roads in the city disrupted traffic and created traffic jams at various places. Hoardings and tin canopies were blown away by strong winds, increasing the risk of accidents. Administration team is monitoring the situation and carrying out relief work.
The Disaster Management Department has directed all districts to be alert. Relief and rescue teams have been kept ready and hospitals have been asked to be ready to treat the injured.
Experts say that such sudden changes in weather are increasing, one reason of which could be climate change. Emphasis is placed on the need to increase preparedness and awareness to deal with such situations in future. At present, the situation is gradually normalizing, but as per the warning of the Meteorological Department, the risk is still there and the administration is monitoring the situation.
