Strengthening Delhi’s education infrastructure: Plan to build 50 new schools by 2029, Education Minister sent proposal to Cabinet

To strengthen the education system in the capital, Delhi government will build 10 new schools every year. The government has set a target of building a total of 50 new schools by the year 2029, so that the additional pressure of students on the existing schools can be reduced. Apart from this, there is also a plan to construct 75 CMShree schools. However, due to the existing construction agencies being overloaded with work, these projects are not progressing at a fast pace. To solve this problem, the Education Department of Delhi Government has planned to involve 5 PSU companies for cooperation in the construction work, so that the construction of schools can be completed on time.

In many areas of Delhi, government school buildings are in a dilapidated condition and at many places schools are still being run in tin sheds. There are a total of 799 government schools in the capital, out of which classes are being held in two shifts in 284 schools due to lack of space. With an aim to improve the education system, the Directorate of Education has prepared a plan for the construction of new school buildings as well as additional classrooms, laboratories, staff rooms and other infrastructure facilities. These construction works are to be started soon so that better educational environment can be provided to the students.

Construction and repair work related to school buildings is currently done through PWD and Tourism and Transport Development Corporation (DTTDC) of Delhi Government. However, due to the additional workload already on these agencies, many projects are not being completed on time. Both the agencies have a large number of construction and repair related works pending. This is not only having a direct impact on the pace of the projects, but is also affecting the education of the children who were to study there after the school building was ready. Keeping this in mind, the Education Department has decided that these works will be done through other agencies, because the department aims to complete most of the construction work by March 2029.

The Education Department has received proposals related to school construction from NBCC, NPCC, WAPCOS, EPIL and UPRNLL. The Education Department has agreed to these proposals and sent them to the Cabinet for approval through Education Minister Ashish Sood. After getting approval from the Cabinet, construction work can be handed over to these agencies, due to which new and modern schools with modern facilities can be constructed rapidly in the capital.
