Strong earthquake hits Pakistan, tremors felt till Peshawar-Islamabad

Islamabad: There was panic in many parts of Pakistan on Friday evening when suddenly strong earthquake tremors were felt. People felt the ground shaking in many cities including the capital Islamabad and Peshawar. The tremors were so strong that people got scared and came out of their homes and offices. At present, it is a matter of relief that there has been no news of any loss of life or property in this earthquake.

5.9 Measured earthquake intensity

The impact of the earthquake was especially seen in some areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab province. According to Pakistan Meteorological Department, the intensity of the earthquake was recorded at 5.9 on the Richter scale. The epicenter of this earthquake, which occurred at around 6:09 pm (local time), was located at a depth of about 101 kilometers from the ground in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan. Movement was felt in buildings in many areas, which created an atmosphere of fear among the people.

Tremors were felt last week also

It is noteworthy that Pakistan falls in a sensitive area in terms of earthquake, because it is located near the border of the Arabian Sea, Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Earlier last week, an earthquake of 5.6 magnitude had occurred in Balochistan province. The epicenter of that earthquake was about 86 kilometers north-east of Khuzdar city. On the same day, another tremor of 3.8 magnitude was felt, whose epicenter was recorded at a depth of 33 kilometers.
