Strong earthquake shakes Mexico, tsunami warning issued
Strong earthquake shakes the southern coast of Mexico. It is known that the earthquake occurred at 8:48 am local time. The quake measured 7.3 on the Richter scale. A tsunami warning has also been issued for certain areas of the Pacific region. No damage was reported in Mexico or Guatemala from the earthquake. Tremors were also felt in El Salvador.
It was reported that the epicenter was about 10 kilometers north of the port of Puerto Madero in Mexico’s Chiapas state, near the Guatemala border. From that epicenter, the coastal area of about 300 km radius can be hit by a terrible tsunami wave. All residents of the area have been warned to be vigilant. Mexico’s Air Force Admiral Raymond Morales said at a press conference that the quake had no serious effects. However, no one should go to the beach until the specified time. Unusual currents and waves may occur at sea, which may last for several hours.
The United States Tsunami Warning System has warned of potentially dangerous tsunami waves in coastal areas near Mexico and Guatemala. Later, waves 0.3 meters (1.1 ft) higher than normal tide levels were recorded in Puerto Madero and Chiapas, Mexico.
Note that New Zealand was shaken by a terrible earthquake on Friday. The magnitude of the tremor was 6.3 on the Richter scale. According to the US Geological Survey and the New Zealand Emergency Management Agency, the epicenter was 40 km from Te Anau, north of Fiordland, at a depth of 50 km. A tsunami warning was issued in the Pacific island nation immediately after the earthquake. However, no damage was reported in the earthquake.
