New Delhi: Former Australia cricketer Stuart Law was removed as the head coach of the USA men’s national cricket team on Saturday by the USA Cricket board. This comes after USA’s 10-wicket drubbing at the hands of Scotland in a qualifying game for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The decision was taken after looking at the team’s tough start in the World Cup League 2 series in Dallas where the USA struggled and were bowled out for 144 in the campaign opener.
Scotland’s Andrew Umeed plotted USA’s misery as he scored an unbeaten 98 to chase down the target in just 24.5 overs at the Grand Prarie Stadium. This recent defeat elevated the team’s challenges, as they entered the match after an embarrassing 3-0 T20 series defeat to Nepal.
In a media release, USA Cricket said, “USA Cricket announced the departure of Men’s National Team Head Coach Stuart Law today. Law was appointed to the position in April and led the team during USA’s historic performance at this year’s T20 World Cup, where the team advanced to the Super 8 in its inaugural World Cup appearance.”
Johnathan Atkeison, CEO of USA Cricket, said that it wasn’t an easy decision to make but ending Law’s tenure was necessary for the team for the next phase, as felt by the board. “Given Stuart’s contribution to the program, this was not an easy decision to make. Unfortunately, we felt that a change was necessary for the next phase of competitive preparation,” Atkeison said in a statement.
Law filled the vacant head coach position at the USA men’s cricket team in April this year, which was a three-year contract deal. He led the team through a remarkable T20 World Cup campaign, co-hosted with the West Indies, where the team made a historic upset by defeating Pakistan and advannced to the Super 8 stage. While they were eventually routed, they caught everyone’s attention with their stellar performances.
Law is known for his coaching experience, having done so for teams like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, West Indies, and Afghanistan. His coaching career with USA has come to an unexpected and abrupt end. But it seems not everything is as straight as it looks.
Report claims allegations against Law
A report in cricbuzz states that the decision to sack Law as the head coach in the middle of the series “comes on the back of some serious allegations of discrimination, mistrust, and favouritism.” Law has been ousted from the role within seven months of his appointment and it has sent shockwaves in the American cricket circles. These allegations were laid by captain Monank Patel and 7-8 senior players in the squad, as per the report.
It also added that tensions rose between the coach and the senior players during the team’s Netherlands tour which was USA’s first assignment after their historic run at the T20 World Cup 2024. The report also claims that USA Cricket tried to “de-escalate the situation” but eventually started an official investigation over allegations on Law during the recent Namibia tour.
Meanwhile, assistant coach, Vincent Vinay Kumar will assume the duties as the interim head coach and ex-USA spinner Usman Rafiq has been added as the assistant coach for the remainder of ODIs against Scotland and Nepal.
