Successful visit of Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Mauritius PM Ramgoolam invited to visit India
New Delhi: India's Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri paid his first official visit to Mauritius from 20 to 22 December 2024. The visit was the first high-level bilateral meeting between the two countries after the formation of the new government in Mauritius. During this, the Foreign Secretary met Mauritius President Dharambir Gokhool, Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Deputy Prime Minister Paul Berenger and Foreign Minister Dhananjay Ramphool. In a meeting with Prime Minister Ramgoolam, Misri congratulated him on his election victory.
The visit comes on the heels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi meeting Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam with his electoral victory in the parliamentary elections in Mauritius on November 11, a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs said. According to the statement, the visit is part of the continued high-level engagement and reflects the importance India attaches to its relations with Mauritius.

In his meeting with the Prime Minister of Mauritius, the Foreign Secretary congratulated Ramgoolam on his recent election victory and reiterated Prime Minister Modi's invitation to Ramgoolam to visit India. The two sides discussed the entire gamut of bilateral relations and the Foreign Secretary sought guidance to further strengthen the special and close partnership between the two countries. The statement said the Foreign Secretary conveyed India's continued commitment to the development, progress and prosperity of Mauritius.
Centuries old relationship between India and Mauritius
According to the statement, the Foreign Secretary visited Aapravasi Ghat, a poignant site reflecting the age-old relationship between India and Mauritius. He also had the opportunity to view projects being developed by India in Mauritius, including the Civil Service College and a regional health center at Cap Malheureux, the statement said.
During the visit the Foreign Secretary called on President Dharambir Gokhool, Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Deputy Prime Minister Paul Berenger and Mauritius Foreign Minister Dhananjay Ramful and met key leaders and officials of Mauritius.
