The Indian Cricket Team has bowled out New Zealand for 259 on Day One of the ongoing Test match as Washington Sundar takes a brilliant seven-fer and annihilates the opposition.
The second of three India vs New Zealand Test matches is currently underway at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Pune. On what seems to be a spin-friendly track, the Kiwis won the toss and decided to bat first.
The day did not start well for the hosts. In the first session of the day, India only picked two wickets. In the eighth over of the innings, Ravichandran Ashwin caught captain Tom Latham in front of the stumps. Then, after a decent partnership between Devon Conway and Will Young, Ashwin got the edge of Young’s glove, and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant caught the ball. No one even appealed except Sarfaraz Khan at short leg, who convinced captain Rohit Sharma to take the review. The UltraEdge showed that the ball had taken an edge from the batter’s gloves.
At the end of the first session, New Zealand were 92/2. A few overs into the second session, Ashwin found the edge of a dangerous-looking Conway, who was playing at 76. At that point in the 44th over, the BlackCaps were 138/3.
Washington Sundar Takes 7 Wickets As NZ Bowled Out
From this point on, it was Washington Sundar’s day. By the time the third wicket fell, the 25-year-old was bowling from one end. After 15 or so overs, we neared the end of the second session. In the 60th over, ‘Washy’ bowled what might be the best ball of the match, pitching it in the middle stump’s line and spinning it away from Rachin Ravindra, who was playing at 65. The ball kissed the off stump, and the bails went flying.
Then, on the last ball of the 62nd over, the last over before the tea break, Sundar dismissed wicketkeeper Tom Blundell to give India the advantage going into the break. At this point, the score was 201/5.
Soon after the break, Washington took his third wicket of the day, catching Daryl Mitchell’s leg in front of the stump. DRS showed that the ball would have hit the stumps, 204/6.
At this point, Glenn Phillips looked a little shaky on the field. And while Mitchell Santner scored runs from one end, Phillips handed an easy catch to Ravichandran Ashwin at mid-off, 236/7. Soon after, Tim Southee was bowled by Sundar, 242/8. Ajaz Patel was bowled in the very next over by Washy, 252/9.
And to close out the innings, Washington Sundar bowled Santner in a similar way he dismissed Rachin Ravindra. As he took his seventh wicket of the inning, New Zealand were bowled out for 259.
The Indian Cricket Team took less than 80 overs to dismiss the complete New Zealand team. But on a spin-haven, any score over 250 is a good one. It now remains to be seen whether Rohit Sharma’s men can take a first-inning lead.
