Big change in NCP, Sunetra Pawar made new national president

With the change of leadership in NCP, a new political innings has started. In the party’s national executive meeting, Sunetra Pawar was unanimously elected as the national president. Working President Praful Patel proposed his name, which was approved by Maharashtra unit President Sunil Tatkare. The members present in the meeting expressed confidence in his leadership by raising their hands.

The decision came in an emotional background

Sunetra Pawar’s election as president is not only being considered an organizational change but also an emotional moment. Her husband and former Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra Ajit Pawar died in a plane crash in Baramati on 28 January 2026. After this tragic incident, discussions were intense within the party regarding leadership, which now culminated with the selection of Sunetra Pawar.

Political heritage and family background

Sunetra Pawar, born on 18 October 1963 in Osmanabad, Maharashtra, belongs to a political and farming family. His father Padamsinh Patil has been a former Minister of State and Lok Sabha MP. The political influence of family has been seen in Maharashtra politics for a long time.

His elder brother has also been active in politics and has been associated with various parties. In this way, Sunetra Pawar’s family network has deep roots in state and national politics.

New responsibility, new challenge

This change within the party has come at a time when NCP needs organizational strength and political direction. It will be a big challenge for Sunetra Pawar to keep the party united, maintain confidence in the workers and sharpen the upcoming election strategy.

Next generation of family also in politics

Sunetra Pawar and Ajit Pawar have two sons, Jai Pawar and Parth Pawar. Parth Pawar had contested from Maval seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, although he was not successful. Despite this, the next generation of the Pawar family is also trying to play an active role in politics.

This leadership change in NCP will decide the future direction of the party. Now all eyes will be on how Sunetra Pawar provides new energy and strategy to the party with the help of her experience and family political legacy.
