Sunil Chhetri creates history, becomes the highest-ever goal scorer in ISL

Former Indian national football team captain Sunil Chhetri created history after scoring a penalty corner against Mohun Bagan SG in the third round of Indian Super League Season 11 on Saturday.

Chhetri’s goal meant that he became the highest-ever goal scorer in the history of the league with a total of 64 goals from 152 games. He also has 11 assists in his ISL career which takes his total goal contributions to 75.

He went past Nigerian footballer Bart Ogbeche who scored 63 goals in 98 games. Ogbeche played across four clubs in his five-year stint scoring goals for NorthEast United, Kerala Blasters, Mumbai City FC, and Hyderabad FC.

Coming with 61 goals this season, Chhetri scored two goals against Hyderabad FC in the previous match to equalize Ogbeche’s record and scored a penalty today to create history.

Chhetri recently retired from international duties after scoring 94 goals from 157 official international appearances.

Sunil Chhetri in ISL

Sunil Chhetri’s ISL journey started with Mumbai City FC picking him up for ₹1.2 crores, making him the most expensive Indian player in the 2015-16 season.

Later that season, Sunil Chhetri became the first-ever Indian player to score a hat trick and finish the season as the top scorer for Mumbai City FC scoring seven goals from 11 games.

He played one more season with Mumbai but failed to score any goals from six games.

With Bengaluru’s entry into the league in 2017, Chhetri has been playing for them since scoring 57 goals.
