Sunil Gavaskar drops a massive bombshell on Rohit Sharma’s future as team India’s captain

Legendary former Indian cricket team captain Sunil Gavaskar made a bombshell statement that Rohit Sharma will step down from captaincy if he continues to be on the lousy run of form. Rohit’s form has been disappointing over the last few matches, which has raised eyebrows from both fans and critics. The attempt to come down to No. 6 in the batting order did not pay off as he failed to score big in the last two Test matches against Australia. While speaking to ABC Sport, Gavaskar believed that Rohit would not wait for the selection committee’s decision on his captaincy but would resign from the position if the next couple of matches in the ongoing five-match series in Melbourne and Sydney did not bring in any improvement in his performance.

“I think Rohit obviously will get the opportunity to play for the next couple of matches, that’s for sure. But maybe at the end of it; if he hasn’t scored, my feeling is that he himself will take the call,” he said.

“He’s a very conscientious cricketer; he will not want to be a burden on the team. The cricketer cares very deeply for Indian cricket.”

“Therefore, if he doesn’t score runs in the next couple of games, I think he will himself step down.”

Meanwhile, veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon of Australia said some of his teammates were amazed at the reaction of the Indian players on the follow-on avoidance of Day Four of the third test held at Gabba.

The closing pair of Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep at the Gabba swung the balance back India’s way by taking them past the follow-on point and also helped them prevent a probable innings defeat. Immediately after Akash got a thick outside edge over gully for four off Pat Cummins, there were jubilant reactions and high-fives among captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir and talismanic batter Virat Kohli.

“There’s a few of us who spoke about (how we’re) surprised about their reaction. We have played well and driven the game to where we are. Frustrating but we are still sitting in the changing room 185 in front. I still feel if we bat well, we can push for an Australian victory.”
