Sunil Gavaskar On Kohli And Konstas Incident: “Both will be pulled”
Sunil Gavaskar On Kohli And Konstas Incident: Legendary Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar has shared his two cents in regard to the Virat Kohli-Sam Konstas altercation that took place on Day One of the fourth Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test matches.
The fourth of five Australia vs India Test matches started today in Melbourne. The home side won the toss and decided to bat first. 19-year-old opener Sam Konstas made his debut for the Australian Cricket Team today.
In the first over, he was tested by the Indian Cricket Team ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah. But then, the debutant did one of the most audacious things one could do to a bowler on Bumrah’s level: he tried to play a ramp shot to the best bowler on the planet.
Then, in the seventh over, he attempted the shot again, this time connecting as the ball flew over fine leg for a four. The next ball, he played the ramp shot again, this time for a six over third man. In the same over, he played the shot for a third time with the ball racing to the boundary again.

But then, the incident happened. At the end of the 10th over, as the fielders were changing their positions, Virat Kohli and Konstas bumped shoulder to shoulder. The two then got into a verbal altercation. It was only when Usman Khawaja arrived at the scene and put his hands on the players’ shoulders that the situation settled.
By that time, the umpire arrived at the scene as well. He talked to both the players, seemingly telling them to calm down and warning them with action.
The entire cricketing world had something to say about the incident. The most common understanding of the incident is that Virat intentionally bumped into the 19-year-old.

While a lot of people were calling for Virat Kohli to get punished, Sunil Gavaskar had different thoughts. He opined that both players would be reprimanded.
“Both will be pulled up for this incident,” said Gavaskar.
While Kohli has been fined 20% of his match fee, no action has been taken on Sam Konstas as of yet.
Gavaskar also discussed how the debutant opener did something very few batters have been able to do, forcing Jasprit Bumrah to change his line and length. He said,
“I haven’t seen anyone treating Jasprit Bumrah like that before. He has forced Bumrah to bowl a different line and length, and the pacer is feeling the pressure. This is white-ball cricket-style batting. The power of youth has taken over at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. He has no fear and no past baggage and is carrying on with a fearless approach.”
Sam Konstas had a solid debut, scoring 60 off 65 before getting dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja. It was a fine Day One of the fourth Border-Gavaskar Trophy. At the end of the day, the Aussies were 311/6. As the series stands at 1-1, the winner of this India vs Australia Test will go into the fifth Test in Sydney with a lead in the series.
