Sunil Lahri reacts to Ranbir as Ram in Ramayana
New Delhi: Sunil Lahri, best known for playing Lakshman in Ramayan, has shared his views on Ranbir Kapoor being cast as Lord Ram in Ramayana Part 1, offering a balanced yet critical perspective.
The comments come after the teaser of the highly anticipated mythological film, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, received mixed reactions from audiences.
Mixed reactions to teaser and casting
While some viewers praised the scale and ambition of the film, others raised concerns about its visual effects and casting choices.
Among the debated aspects was Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal of Lord Ram, a character deeply rooted in Indian cultural and spiritual ethos.
Sunil Lahri joined the conversation by comparing the new portrayal with that of Arun Govil, who famously played Lord Ram in the original TV series.
‘Innocence and calm missing’
Speaking about Ranbir’s look, Lahri said, “Ranbir looks okay, but the innocence is a little less. The patience, calm, and innocence Arun had are missing here.”
However, he also expressed confidence in Ranbir’s acting abilities, adding that the actor is likely to justify the role through his performance.
Suggestion for fresh casting
Lahri further suggested that mythological roles often benefit from casting relatively new faces rather than established stars.
“For such a role, it’s always better to cast a fresh face. A new actor, with no image or controversy, is always an ideal match,” he said.
He also remarked that Ranbir’s personality might have been better suited for characters like Lakshman or Bharat.
Ranbir’s dual role in the film
Meanwhile, Ranbir Kapoor revealed that he will be seen in a dual role in the film, portraying both Lord Ram and Lord Parshurama.
Speaking at an international event, he explained that he relied on body language and voice modulation to differentiate between the two characters.
He also emphasised the importance of understanding the spiritual and emotional depth of the roles, stating that his preparation involved studying the characters’ motivations and significance.
A grand cinematic project
Ramayana Part 1 is being positioned as one of the most ambitious projects in Indian cinema. The film also stars Yash as Ravana, Sai Pallavi as Sita, and Sunny Deol as Hanuman.
Produced by Namit Malhotra, the film is planned as a two-part saga, with the first instalment scheduled for release during Diwali 2026 and the second part expected in Diwali 2027.
Legacy of the original Ramayan
The original Ramayan, directed by Ramanand Sagar, remains one of the most iconic television shows in India, having aired on Doordarshan between 1987 and 1988.
Its portrayal of characters like Ram and Lakshman continues to influence audience expectations, making any modern adaptation subject to close scrutiny.
Conclusion
Sunil Lahri’s remarks reflect the challenge of reimagining a culturally significant epic for a new generation. While Ranbir Kapoor’s casting has sparked debate, the film’s scale and ambition ensure that it remains one of the most closely watched releases ahead of its Diwali 2026 debut.
