Sunjay Kapur Rs 30,000 crore estate case: Delhi High Court reserves order after bitter family battle

Sunjay Kapur Rs 30,000 crore estate case: Proceedings in the high-profile estate dispute surrounding the late industrialist Sunjay Kapur have formally concluded, with the Delhi High Court reserving its order on December 24. The case involves competing claims over an estate estimated at Rs 30,000 crore and has drawn attention due to its emotional undertones and serious allegations within the family.

The legal battle was initiated by Sunjay Kapur’s children with Karisma Kapoor, Samaira Kapur and Kiaan Raj Kapur. A plea was filed questioning the authenticity of a Will that allegedly names Sunjay’s widow, Priya Sachdev Kapur, as the sole beneficiary. The children claimed the document was “forged and fabricated” and alleged that the signature on the Will was not genuine.

Priya Sachdev Kapur faces sharp allegations of greed during court proceedings

During hearings, sharp allegations were levelled against Priya Sachdev Kapur. In court filings, she was described as an “acute gambler” and accused of greed. Comparisons were also made to “Cinderella’s stepmother,” reflecting the intensity of the dispute. The children sought a share in the estate, arguing that it was implausible for their father to exclude them entirely.

According to reports by ANI, Justice Jyoti Singh confirmed that all remaining written submissions had been taken on record. It was clarified that no further filings would be accepted before the order is pronounced. While oral arguments had concluded earlier, the matter was formally closed for consideration on Tuesday.

Sunjay Kapur’s mother Rani Kapur questions existence and secrecy of Will

The Will has also been challenged by Sunjay Kapur’s mother, Rani Kapur, who told the court that she was never informed of its existence during her son’s lifetime. It was pointed out that the document does not acknowledge her at all. Additional claims suggested that parts of the estate were concealed or moved overseas after Sunjay’s death.

These allegations were firmly denied by senior advocate Rajiv Nayar, appearing for Priya Sachdev Kapur. He stated that a complete and documented list of assets had already been submitted. Claims about Sunjay earning ₹60 crore annually were also disputed. On the issue of an alleged Rolex watch, it was argued that the image relied upon came from a fake social media account.

On the other side, senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, representing Samaira and Kiaan, highlighted multiple inconsistencies in the Will and sought an interim injunction to prevent any disposal of the estate. Rani Kapur’s counsel echoed similar concerns, stating it was unlikely that Sunjay would leave his entire personal wealth to one person, given his close ties with his children and family.
