Sunrisers Hyderabad to retain South Africa explosive batter for INR 23 crore, captain Pat Cummins to take a pay cut: Report

Sunrisers Hyderabad, last season’s finalists, are ready to make a big move regarding the retention of the players. SRH will surpass the mandated retention slabs set by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Their decision is aimed at keeping their best players in the squad. Pat Cummins, who was appointed as their skipper in 2024, led from the front as the franchise competed against KKR in the mega-match.

According to a report by ESPNCricinfo, the Orange Army will pay INR 23 crore to South African star Heinrich Klaasen, who will be their first retention.

Klaasen will become the second highest-paid player in the history of the cash-rich league, only behind Australia pacer Mitchell Starc, who was paid INR 24.75 crore by KKR in the previous season.

Pat Cummins, who was bought for INR 20.50 crore in the 17th season, will take a 13.80 pat cut and will be retained for INR 18 crore.

Abhishek Sharma will get INR 14 crore from the 2016 champions. He earned INR 6.50 crore in the previous three editions.

Travis Head and Nitish Kumar will also stay with the franchise.

The slabs decided by the BCCI are the minimum amount that will deducted from the overall cap of the franchise. However, if a team decides to pay more to a cricketer, they will come to the auction with a lesser purse.

This is what exactly Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) did when they paid Virat Kohli INR 17 crore in 2018, exceeding the limit of INR 15 crore. In 2022, KL Rahul was paid INR 17 crore by Lucknow Super Giants in the pre-auction draft, which was INR 2 crore more than the top slab.
