Supporters of genocide! Aji protested around the prime minister at the Eid prayer in Sydney, the gathering hastily left
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese faced protests at one of Sydney’s largest Lakemba mosques while attending Eid prayers. Albanese had to leave his gathering amid intense anger and taunts from worshipers who were present to protest the government’s position on Israeli aggression in Gaza.
Eid was celebrated in Sydney on Friday. In the morning, Prime Minister Albanese and Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke attended Sydney’s Lakemba Mosque at the invitation of Islamic community leaders. Tensions flared at the start of the event when a mosque leader delivered a message calling for stronger communication from the government. A large section of people present accused the two leaders of being ‘supporters of genocide’ and shouted at them to leave the mosque.
There is long-standing deep resentment among the country’s Muslim community over the Antony government’s role in the Israeli assault on Gaza and the devastation in Lebanon. In addition, common people are angry with the government’s failure to control the growing Islamophobia in Australia. Eyewitnesses said that even when the Prime Minister was leaving the crowd, many people were shouting, ‘Get him out of here! It’s a shame.’ However, Albanese did not comment on this.
