Supreme Court Hearing On OTT Platform: The Supreme Court has rejected the demand for formation of a board to monitor the programs of OTT platform. The Supreme Court refused to hear the demand for formation of the board and said that there is no need for formation of the board. The government itself will monitor the OTT platform.

The petition was filed regarding a series of Netflix. It was said in the petition that the certification of films in India is done by the Central Board of Film Certification i.e. CBFC. There is no system to give performance certificate to OTT programs after watching them. A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra refused to hear the petition related to OTT.

Actually, the whole matter is related to the Netflix series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack. The TT platform claimed that it was based on real-life events. The petition alleges that the OTT medium has become a medium for advertising banned things like gambling, drugs, alcohol, smoking etc.

Advocate Shashank Jha, who filed the petition, told the court that before releasing anything on OTT, it does not go through the certification process, due to which scenes are shown without any warning. Because of this, violence, alcohol consumption and other harmful things are encouraged. According to the petitioner, the government made IT guidelines in 2021, but it had no impact on OTT. He said that OTT platforms take advantage of the lack of rules and keep showing controversial content without stopping. He said, “Shows full of violence, obscenity and foul language are being shown indiscriminately on OTT. This also impacts national security.

However, even after hearing all these arguments, the Supreme Court refused to approve the formation of a board to monitor the OTT platform.
