Supreme Court: ‘Don’t even think that anyone can threaten me…’; Chief Justice Suryakant’s warning to whom?

  • Concern over social media comments by Chief Justice
  • Observation on Revanna’s petition
  • The judge’s questions are not biased

Supreme Court News:People often make up their own stories based on initial observations made by judges during hearings, but such feedback or criticism has no effect on their decision-making. They can be completely impartial in this matter,” Chief Justice Suryakant has responded in these words. Chief Justice Suryakant expressed concern over comments on social media on pending cases in the court.

Speaking during the hearing on the petition filed by former MP Prajwal Revanna, the Chief Justice made the observation. Revanna had sought transfer of the pending rape cases against her to another court.

Chief Justice Suryakant said, “Revanna’s lawyers Siddharth Luthra and Siddharth Dave sought to have the judge’s comments made during the hearing to be struck off the record. They said that these comments were offensive to the lawyers and could create an impression of bias in the court, hence the case should be transferred elsewhere.”

Justice Jaimala Bagchi, presided over by the Chief Justice, said the judge’s comments could not be based on bias. “We have no reason to doubt that the judge will not be influenced by the fact that the petitioner has been convicted in a previous case and will base his findings only on the evidence presented in the present case,” the bench said.

As reported by Live Law, Chief Justice Suryakant clarified that the questions asked by the judge during the court hearing are only to test the strength of the arguments of both sides and do not represent the final opinion of the court. However, he lamented that people often jump to conclusions without realizing it and create stories based on questions asked during hearings.

Chief Justice Suryakant said, “I am not influenced by social media or anything else. If anyone thinks they can intimidate me, they are wrong. I am a very strong person.”

Meanwhile, an open letter was recently written to the Chief Justice by former judges, lawyers and activists. In that letter, the statement of the Chief Justice regarding Rohingya was objected to. That is why his comments are being looked at in the background of this letter.

“Should we give a red carpet welcome to infiltrators?” during a hearing in the Rohingya custodial disappearance case. Such a question was raised.

After a lawyer called the Rohingyas official refugees during the hearing, the chief justice asked for evidence as to when the central government granted them refugee status. He also raised the issue of how a person who enters the country illegally can later claim citizenship rights.
