The Supreme Court, taking suo motu cognizance, has decided to hear the heinous crime of rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata. The decision came after a Kolkata court sentenced convict Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment. Now the demand for death penalty for the culprit in this case is increasing.
According to Bar & Bench report, the Supreme Court will hear the matter on Wednesday. Earlier, Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das of Sealdah court had convicted Sanjay Roy of the crime.
The heart-wrenching incident took place on August 9, when a postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and then murdered at the hospital. This crime had created anger and outrage across the country, leading to massive demonstrations.
