‘Surel’ solution to the stress of lactating mothers! Significant increase in breast milk with music therapy experiment at Kama Hospital
A study at Kama & Albales Hospital has given solid support to this simple but scientific fact that if the stress on the mother’s mind is reduced, the flow of milk also increases. Statistics have shown a significant increase in milk collection after introducing the use of quiet music while expressing breast milk in human milk banks. The experiment revealed that ‘music therapy’ was an effective intervention, not limited to emotional support, but positively affecting the hormones associated with breast milk production. Because of this, the milk of high-lactating mothers will be beneficial for the babies of low-lactating mothers.(Photo courtesy – istock)

Meanwhile, in view of the direct impact of stress, anxiety and emotional instability after delivery on the production of breast milk, an experiment of ‘silent music therapy’ was implemented during the process of expressing breast milk from July 2024 at the human milk farm of Kama & Albales Hospital in Mumbai. This intervention was reported to significantly increase milk production. The production and secretion of breast milk is mainly dependent on two hormones ‘Prolactin’ and ‘Oxytocin’. Prolactin is responsible for milk production and increases when the mother is calm and emotionally stable. Oxytocin is responsible for milk release and is adversely affected by stress. Music reduces the stress response in the brain, reduces cortisol levels and activates the body’s ‘rest and digest’ system. As a result, the level of oxytocin increases and facilitates the flow of milk, experts say.
“Music therapy is not only an emotional support but also scientifically proven neuro-hononal. When the mother calms down, the process of milk production naturally goes smoothly. After adding music to the human milk bank, there has been a consistent increase in milk production,” informed Dr. Tushar Palve, Medical Superintendent, Cama Hospital.
