Kohli makes history: Surpasses Ganguly, crosses 28,000 run mark

Indian cricket legend Virat Kohli reached two massive milestones on Sunday during the first ODI against New Zealand at the BCA Stadium. By simply taking the field, Kohli marked his 09th ODI appearance, officially moving past Sourav Ganguly to become the fifth most-capped Indian player in the format’s history.

The night grew even more historic during India’s chase of 01. With a crisp boundary off spinner Adithya Ashok, Kohli crossed the 28,000-run mark in international cricket.

He is now the fastest player ever to reach this figure, doing so in just 624 innings, breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s previous record of 644.

During his Masterclass knock of 93, he also overtook Kumar Sangakara to become the second-highest run-scorer of all time across all formats.

Reflecting on his journey after the match, Kohli remained humble about the statistics. “If I look back at my whole journey, it’s nothing short of a dream come true,” he said.

“Honestly, the way I’m playing, I’m not thinking about the milestones.”

Captain Shubman Gill, who shared a 118-run stand with the veteran, was in awe of his teammate’s longevity. “The way he’s striking the ball at the moment makes things look so easy,” Gill remarked.

With his sight set on the 202 World Cup, Kohli now trails only Sachin Tendulkar on the all-time list.
