Surprising story: Song written on aluminum foil of cigarette packet, even Nehru could not stop tears
This song was written in memory of the soldiers martyred in the India-China war of 1962. Its lyricist Kavi Pradeep had composed it in a very short time. It is said that when this composition came to his mind, he did not have paper. He wrote it in a unique way while walking on Mumbai’s Mahim beach, asked a passerby for a pen and wrote its lyrics on the aluminum foil of a cigarette box.
More than 100 lines were initially written for the song, but only select lines were included in the final version. This is the reason why deep emotions and patriotism are felt in every word.
This song was sung by the great singer Lata Mangeshkar, whose voice made it immortal. The first choice for this song was actually Asha Bhosle and she even rehearsed it, but later Lata Mangeshkar expressed her desire to sing it, which was accepted.
When this song was performed in public for the first time, its impact was unforgettable. Pandit Nehru was present on the stage and his eyes became moist as soon as he heard the song. Everyone present there was filled with emotions and the entire atmosphere was drenched in the spirit of patriotism.
Even today this song resonates on every Independence Day and Republic Day and reminds us of the sacrifice of the martyrs. Its popularity is proof that a song written with true emotions transcends the boundaries of time and becomes history.
