Suryakumar credits analyst as India crush Zimbabwe
India captain Suryakumar Yadav revealed that a detailed presentation by the team’s video analyst helped the side reset mentally ahead of their crucial Super 8 clash in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026paving the way for a commanding 72-run win over Zimbabwe at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Thursday.
India produced a dominant batting display to post 256/4 — their highest-ever total in a T20 World Cup — before restricting Zimbabwe to seal a comprehensive victory. The result sets up a virtual knockout clash against West Indies in Kolkata on Sunday.
Analyst’s presentation sparks turnaround
Speaking at the post-match presentation, Suryakumar said the team consciously chose to leave behind the disappointments of earlier matches and focus on their strengths.
“I think we wanted to leave everything behind. We didn’t think too much about what we did in the league stage or in the last game in Ahmedabad. Our video analyst had prepared a slide for all the batters and bowlers, highlighting what we’ve done well over the past year,” he said.
According to the skipper, revisiting their strengths helped the squad regain clarity and confidence.
“We looked at that, took a lot of positivity from it, and came here with clarity. With contributions from the top order right down to number seven, I think there was hardly anything missing in our performance,” he added.
The renewed mindset was evident as India’s batters attacked from the outset, maintaining tempo throughout the innings.
Abhishek, Hardik power record total
The foundation of India’s massive total was laid by explosive half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma and Hardik Pandya.
Abhishek continued his aggressive approach at the top, while Pandya provided the finishing flourish with a rapid 23-ball fifty. Pandya, who was named Player of the Match, said he had to reassess his approach during the innings.
“Pretty happy. I mean, it sounds 23-ball 50, but I think I had to reassess the situation as well. I felt I was trying to hit too hard. Then I realised I can time the ball and still clear the ropes,” Pandya said.
He added that the knock helped him regain rhythm after a few underwhelming outings. “It was a good game to continue the rhythm because I feel that in a couple of games I could not do what I wanted to do. So pretty satisfied.”
Bowling still a work in progress
Despite the emphatic win, Suryakumar admitted that India could have been more clinical with the ball.
“To be very honest, we could have been a little more clinical with the ball. But at the end of the day, a win is a win, and we’ll take it as we move forward. We’ll definitely tighten a few screws when we go and play the West Indies cricket team,” he said.
He was also generous in his praise for Zimbabwe’s batters, noting their intelligent approach on a good batting surface.
“I don’t want to take any credit away from the Zimbabwean batters. They batted beautifully. Yes, the wicket was good, but the way they approached the innings — taking their time in the powerplay and then accelerating smartly — was impressive.”
The skipper emphasised the need for courage in key moments, especially in high-pressure Super 8 matches. “From a bowling point of view, we could have been a little smarter with certain options. In situations like this, we need to be courageous with our decisions. There’s no option other than taking the positive route.”
Focus shifts to Kolkata showdown
With the win, India have kept their semi-final hopes alive, but the upcoming clash in Kolkata is expected to decide their fate in the tournament.
Pandya admitted that the team had been keeping an eye on other results, including the earlier contest involving South Africa and West Indies, but insisted that the primary focus remained on executing their own plans.
“Now it’s all about playing good cricket, backing your skill set, absorbing the pressure and making sure you put your best foot forward,” he said.
As the squad prepares to travel to Kolkata, Suryakumar stressed the importance of a short mental break before the high-stakes encounter.
“Once we reach Kolkata, we’ll sit down and plan properly for that game. For now, it’s about taking a day off, travelling and relaxing,” he said.
With a record-breaking total behind them and confidence restored, India head into the decisive fixture with renewed belief and momentum.
