Suryakumar Yadav wanted captaincy assurance from Mumbai Indians, franchise refused to commit anything: Report

Mumbai Indians (MI) have retained their core group for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah and Tilak Varma will represent the franchise in the 18th season. With a salary of INR 18 crore, Bumrah topped the list.

ESPNcricinfo has reported that Mumbai Indians allowed the players to take a call on their retention slots. Suryakumar Yadav wants to lead the five-time champions in future. He wanted to know about the plans Mumbai have for him. The decision-makers asked SKY for his conditions but told him that they wouldn’t commit anything.

Tte talks between the two parties went for a long time before the star batter agreed to sign the contract extension. He will play under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy.

Suryakumar led MI once when Rohit Sharma was injured during IPL 2023. Sharma played that game as an impact player.

Rohit was sacked as a captain and replaced by Hardik Pandya before the start of IPL 2024. However, Mumbai finished last in the previous season.

Hardik was not given Team India’s captaincy after Rohit’s retirement from the shortest format after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Suryakumar was preferred over Hardik.
