Sweet Potato: Are you also eating ‘coloured’ sweet potatoes? Identify real or fake with these 4 easy methods at home

News India Live, Digital Desk: Eating sweet potato in the winter season is considered very beneficial for health, but do you know that the shiny and red looking sweet potatoes available in the market can also harm your health? Sweet potato is a treasure trove of vitamins, fiber and antioxidants, but adulterators have not spared it too. Seeing a bright red sweet potato, we often buy it considering it to be ‘quality’, whereas sometimes it is just a wonder of synthetic color. If you are concerned about the health of your family, then do these 4 tests before buying: 1. The Water Test: This is the simplest method. Take water in a big bowl and soak the sweet potatoes in it for 5-10 minutes. Fake Identification: If the color of the water starts turning pink or red, then understand that external coloring has been used on it. True Identification: The color of the real sweet potatoes does not leave in water.2. Magic of Cotton Ball: You can do this test while buying sweet potatoes in the market. Take a clean cotton ball and dip it in some water or vegetable oil. Test: Rub it on the upper surface of the sweet potato. If red or pink marks appear on the cotton, then the sweet potato is adulterated.3. Try the Scrub (The Scrub Test) Lightly scrub the sweet potatoes with your fingers or any rough surface. Caution: If the color sticks to your fingers when you rub or a light yellow or white color starts appearing from beneath the sweet potato, then it has been coated with color. The skin of a real sweet potato does not lose its natural color when rubbed.4. Changes after boiling (Boiling Method) Even when you boil a sweet potato, its purity can be known. Fake: If the water turns dark red or muddy pink while boiling and the color of the sweet potato fades completely, then it may be containing chemicals. Real: Real sweet potato retains its natural color even after boiling and does not leave any dark color in the water. Beware of fake color ‘Rhodamine-B’! Often used on sweet potatoes A dye called Rhodamine-B is used. According to health experts, long-term consumption of this chemical can cause stomach diseases, liver damage and even cancer.
