Pictures and videos going viral on social media platforms claim that the soundproofing foam on the ceiling of a luxury bar named Le Constellation played an important role in instigating the fire. The viral photo, shared by Visegrad24, purportedly shows candles or sparklers placed on champagne bottles getting too close to the bar’s low ceiling, causing the foam to catch fire.

Scene of panic seen in video

Meanwhile, in the video shared by commentator Mario Nofal, a scene of chaos is seen inside the bar. In the video, some people are seen trying to extinguish the fire, while others are seen looking for ways out to save their lives. Knopf claimed, quoting eyewitnesses, that a champagne bottle with a sparkler was lifted up during the celebration, causing it to reach directly near the ceiling and the foam immediately catching fire. However, the Swiss administration has not confirmed these viral claims. Officials say that the investigation is still going on and it is too early to reach any conclusion.

Investigating agencies are working on many aspects

Valais Canton’s Attorney General Beatrice Pillaud told the media that the investigative agencies are working on several aspects. He said that primarily the ‘flashover’ theory is being investigated. According to Pillaud, “Many circumstances are still to be clarified. Many possibilities are being considered. The main theory currently being worked on is that of a flashover, due to which the fire spread very quickly. Statements of several witnesses have been taken and mobile phones recovered from the scene are being examined.”

What is flashover?

flashover That situation occurs when extremely hot gases accumulate near the ceiling in a closed space and the temperature suddenly increases so much that the flammable objects present there catch fire simultaneously. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), a fire becomes out of control within seconds after a flashover.

200 people were present in the bar at the time of the accident.

It is reported that around 200 people were present in the bar at the time of the accident, which included a large number of young tourists. As soon as the fire broke out, emergency services had to engage in relief work throughout the night. The injured were taken to the hospital with the help of ambulances and rescue helicopters. Officials have made it clear that this incident is not being seen as a terrorist attack. It is also being investigated whether the bar followed the fire safety rules, materials used in the roof and interior, and standards related to emergency exits.
