New T20 league entered in cricket, 6 teams will participate; Will start from January 2027
The era of franchise T20 leagues is continuously gaining momentum in the world of cricket. After the successes like India’s IPL and Australia’s Big Bash League, now another country is going to join this race. New Zealand Cricket has also made a major change in its domestic structure and decided to start a new T20 league, which can carve a special place in the global cricket calendar in the coming times.
This move by the New Zealand Cricket Board (NZC) is not limited to just launching a new league, but it also aims to modernize the country’s domestic cricket and give a bigger platform to young players. The board has clearly indicated that now priority will be given to the franchise model instead of traditional tournaments.
NZ20 will start from January 2027 with 6 teams
NZC has decided to launch its new franchise based T20 league ‘NZ20’. A total of 6 teams will participate in this league and it is likely to start from January 2027. The board believes that New Zealand’s cricket ecosystem will get a new identity through this league.
This league can become a center of attraction not only for domestic players but also for international stars. Investment will increase through the franchise model and cricket will get a new commercial dimension.
NZ20: New format will replace 21 year old Super Smash
‘Super Smash’ T20 tournament is being played in New Zealand for the last 21 years, but with the changing times, the board has now decided to change it. NZC has taken this big step in view of the increasing popularity and economic success of T20 leagues around the world. Board chairperson Diana Puketapu-Lindon said that there was a long discussion regarding the expansion of the Big Bash League and the launch of a new league, after which the decision was taken to launch NZ20.
NZ20: Young players will get world class platform
According to Diana Puketapu-Lindon, the NZ20 will be the start of an “exciting period” for New Zealand cricket. The biggest benefit of this league will be given to the young players of the country, who will now get a chance to play with international level players.
NZ20: Impact of increasing brand value of New Zealand cricket
After the Deloitte report and discussions with various stakeholders, it emerged that the global brand value of New Zealand cricket has increased tremendously. The women’s team’s T20 World Cup win and the men’s team’s consistent performance have further strengthened this value.
To capitalize on this growing popularity, NZC is now moving towards launching its own premium T20 league. Although official approval is yet to be received, the indications are clear that cricket fans may get to see a new league from January 2027.
