T20 World Cup 2026: Markram hits fastest fifty as South Africa crush New Zealand
New Delhi: South Africa hammered New Zealand by 7 wickets in the Group D match of the T20 World Cup 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Saturday, February 14. Skipper Aiden Markram struck fastest half-century for South Africa in the T20 World Cups as the Proteas men chased down the 176-run target in 17.1 overs, while all-rounder Marco Jansen picked up 4 wickets.
With six points from three matches, South Africa will be the favourites to qualify for the next stage of the tournament. They will next take on the UAE in New Delhi, while New Zealand will face Canada in Chennai on Tuesday.
Quinton de Kock scored 20 runs but fell to Lockie Ferguson after helping the Proteas to a quick start. Ryan Rickelton also amassed 21 runs off 11 balls, whose cameo kept the momentum going, also lost his wicket to James Neesham after a good start.
The Proteas men crossed the 100-run mark inside eight overs. Rickelton and Dewald Brevis departed in quick succession, but South Africa chased down the target comfortably. Markram seamlessly changed gears and hit boundaries at regular intervals to put pressure on New Zealand bowlers.
The Proteas captain completed his half-century in just 19 balls, which is the fastest by a South African batter in the T20 World Cup history. Markram smashed an unbeaten 86 runs off 44 balls with the help of eight boundaries and four maximums. David Miller also scored an unbeaten 24 runs and finished the match with Markram.
