Australia gets tied up due to World Cup in 7 days? It is certain to be out of the group stage! View Points Table

T20 World Cup 2026 Points Table Updated: Before the start of T20 World Cup 2026, hardly anyone would have imagined that former champion Australia would be on the verge of being eliminated from the group stage itself. Despite the absence of key bowlers like Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, the team was considered a strong contender to reach at least the semi-finals. But within just seven days, the journey of the team captained by Mitchell Marsh seems to be coming to a halt. Australia is in a position to be eliminated from the first round even before playing the last match of the group stage and this could be finalized on Tuesday 17th February.

Second consecutive defeat spoiled the equation

The tournament began on 7 February, while Australia played its first match on 11 February. In that match, the team made a great start by defeating Ireland. However, the situation changed after this. In the next match, Australia faced a setback against Zimbabwe. This was only the second time in T20 World Cup history (the first being in 2007) that Zimbabwe defeated Australia.

It was expected that the team would make a comeback against Sri Lanka and then defeat Oman and make it to the Super-8. But on Monday 16 February, host Sri Lanka defeated Australia by 8 wickets in 18 overs. This defeat has almost ruined the chances of the Kangaroo team.

in danger of being out in a few hours

Australia are third in Group B with just 2 points from three matches. Only two teams from each group will reach the Super-8 and currently Sri Lanka has qualified. In second place is Zimbabwe, which has 4 points. Now everyone’s eyes are on the match between Zimbabwe and Ireland. If the team led by Sikandar Raza wins this match, it will advance to the next round and Australia’s journey will end.

How can Australia survive?

If Zimbabwe loses to Ireland, they will still have a chance to qualify for the final match where they will face Sri Lanka. On the other hand, Australia’s hopes rest on Zimbabwe losing both its remaining matches and defeating Oman in its final match.

In such a situation, Zimbabwe, Australia and Ireland can have 4 points each. Then the decision will be taken on the basis of net run rate, where Australia will have a chance to move ahead if it has a better run rate. At present, the fate of the Kangaroo team seems to depend on the results of other matches.
